    Crying [:'(] Undo destroys websites!

Expression still seems buggy to me. I've encountered a number of destructive issues that have left me re-doing hours of work.

Undo frequently undoes more than just the last action, which can often mean hours of lost work. Sometimes you're lucky and redo works, most of the time I'm not! What's worse though is that even if you can redo on the page you're working on, the last undo you did may very well have removed any recent styles you've made in a style sheet that isn't even open. So there's no way to redo the styles. You just have to remember what you did and recreate them hoping that you get the names exactly right. I don't want to think about how many of my pages have probably been trashed since I've been using it. I guess I'll find out when I test the whole thing.

Another thing that's driving me crazy is the breaking links. The code around links is randomly shuffling or losing chunks, which naturally causes some pretty weird stuff. You can dive in and hand code the fixes but when you're done and you save it just goes and does it again to another link somewhere else on the page. My worst offending page is quite long and has a large number of links so i don't know if there is a limit to what it can handle or something. Either way it doesn't fill me with joy everytime I have to tweak a page, since it might break more than it fixes!

I'm praying there will be an update for Expression soon, otherwise I may lose my loyalty. I've used Frontpage for years and the transition to Expression has been rough. Fingers crossed for a patch!

I know some others have complained about the undo feature - I have never had a problem with it fortunately. But I also save almost every minute as well just in case.

With the links, can you post an example of the before and after so we can see what it is doing?

Unfortunately saving alone isn't enough since it seems to be able to undo work on css style sheets that have been saved and closed! It's hard to show the link damage since you never know where it's going to happen so I wouldn't be able to show it. It's not as though I've tried to reproduce the bug... I just want to finish the page. But next time it happens I'll try and take a copy of the messed up code.

With the CSS, I have read of this (known) issue. Microsoft is aware of it and hopefully they will be able to fix it.

    Hi Corey,
Do you have the URL of the KB article on the CSS issue? I can't seem to find it, but the MS site is not exactly user friendly! I know that the idea is simple: a change in the CSS on the page should open and change the CSS in the external style sheet. That's how it also works in Dreamweaver. I have also not encountered the "undo" bug but I'm glad for the heads-up that it may be a problem!

I don't have this issue either thankfully.

I don't have a KB unfortunately but some have alluded that it might be a Norton Antivirus issue. If you have Norton, disable it, now run the repair for Expression Web. (You might need to do this through the Control Panel depending on the Operating System.) Once Expression Web is "fixed / repaired", start Norton again

I can't recreate the behavior. Everything works OK for me. Win XP w/ Norton AV (corp edition) and Expression Studio.

Now that theory sounds plausable. I do have Norton Secruity 2007. So I'm trying your suggestion. I'll put Expression through it's paces today and come back to let you know what the results were. Thanks.

I am wondering though if this just another Vista issue as well? Do you know if you disabled AV before installation? Of course the corporate edition might have some type of an effect as well

I hope so. It is a start and should only take 10-15 minutes hopefully, well worth it if it does fix the issue

    Re: Undo destroys websites!

I did not disable Norton AV at all. The newer versions of Norton do not have as much of a negative impact on installs as they did in the past. My experiences with Vista (as a BETA tester and ex-user) leads me to believe that it will not be the issue either. That being said, I keep very clean and very updated machines that have more than enough RAM and CPU to bar-b-que a cow.
